is it possible to use beta to measure the efficiency of the market?
Am doing my dissertation now and the topic relates to EMH. Coz I found beta is also a potential factor to interpret the market efficiency since it shows the volatility of the equity toward the market index. Here is what I link them together: if a stock is very volatile (beta>1, the movement can be up or down) that there is a lot of new information being made available and the market is adjusting to it. As far as i’ve done, I calculated the past and present beta within 2 years and compared them but the result provided an unclear answer because there is not much difference between the two value showing that the beta changed within 2 years. And now I dont know how to continue to interpret them to test the efficiency of the market. I tried to find some previous studies but non of them really related to wat am looking for. could anyone pls help me out of this situation, I just wanna know is there any percent of success that I can move on with this topic and how? How beta can become a factor to measure the market efficiency? Thank a lot.
Shouldn't the Federal Reserve raise interest rates?
The costs of living are rising? So shouldn’t the fed raise rates to slow things down? I think subprime threw them a curve ball! But I think they should crack down on fraud and mismanagement, jail a few major investors and change investment rules so that the volatility in the markets will erase itself. After all, the markets are mostly bets placed on a rise and fall of a stock price or percieved values per moment, when in acuality, some companies need this cash, but many do not! They do not need investor’s money to keep going, so they are using that leverage to make money in the markets off of options and dissuading smaller investors from playing against the house. Is this fair? Should our stock market be played like this? And should they be allowed to play our tax dollars like this too?
I think raise interest rates and watch these guys sweat a little like they have made small investors sweat!
While I agree that wealth pays taxes, I am also aware that somebody raised those children to get that wealth! The people that put the diapers on those kids and paid for their education and what not do not deserve to be downtrodden. I am an American Taxpayer and I don’t like paying double taxes, once to put diapers on the wealthy kids and then again to pay for extravagant homes they did not have to buy in the first place.
I cannot imagine owning a 700k house when I am in my early 20’s! That is just so totally bogus! I am opposed to supporting that! I busted my hump most of my life to even have my modest lifestyle now!
I want the fed to do it’s job and raise interest rates!

Am I very lucky or is it the market conditon?
I’m 24 I work full time as an accountant. I day traded 4 years ago but i was very impatient and kept selling as soon as i saw the stock price drop. I lost lots of money. However, now i’ve graduated from college and understand the way the market works. I’m using contrarian market principle at a more simplified and quicker approach. The principle says buy when a stock is turning low and sell when it eventually goes up. I buy when a stock plummets and sell after a short gain from a quick bounce in share price. I don’t sell untill it recovers! It hasn’t worked perfectly b/c i’ve had to wait up to 3 months once for a stock to get out of the red. I’m just looking to make a quick 0 a week of a 1-2% upside. What do you think about this strategy? Is this strategy only successful b/c of the high volume and volatility in the current market place? I’m using all my savings to trade and made about K this year mostly due to 3 windfall trades where i gained 10%. Should i continue with this strategy? Should i stop and leave my money in a bank? What was your experince of day trading? Is it like gambeling? lets not forget the high taxes i’ll be paying at the end of the year.
How should I invest now?
How should I invest?
I have
47k in cash (Savings/Checking)
25.5k in a MIP Class III fidelity fund (401k).
Total assets about ,500.
No debt.I rent and I move from time to time.
I am 28 year old. How should I invest. I can withstand about 10-15% volatility. I don’t want the 2008 stock market wild ride.
Where can I invest my money in business or…..?
For the last year or so I’ve (thankfully) been saving much more than I can spend. Last year I started to invest in the stock market and things are going ok, and I’m happy with that considering the volatility of the stock markets these days. I’m investing there more for the long term/retirement.
However, I’d really like to invest in a small company or two, maybe even start up company, and be a kind of silent partner with little responsibility. This would be more to balance up the risk of my stocks. Probably looking to start with small investments of perhaps a few thousand pounds.
Any ideas where I can find information about going about this?
Short term stock trading?
Recently, with the volatility of the Market, I have begun to buy stocks and when they go up by few hundreds $, I sell, knowing that it will drop again, and repeat the process. The financials (C, JPM, WFC) are so predictable. I feel nervous about what I am doing. Do I just need to pay the taxes on the profits as if they were CD interests, short term Cap gains, and regular income? I do not want to be surprised when doing my taxes. But I’m having so much fun!!
What is the best online stock trading site for the casual investor?
I would expect to make 1 – 3 trades a month.
