Was the period directly after the Lehman Collapse a Wolf Market?

We are experiencing short periods of extreme volatility in the stock market. In the wake of the debt calamity in Washington and the Euro sovereign debt crisis. Are these Wolf Markets rather than Bear or Bull.

I would also like to know from experienced traders if the current economic trends coming from the emerging markets are best described as Stag Markets. Turkey, Brazil, Russia, Indonesia and South Africa.

I heard if VIX is 23 or higher that means i should stay away from the stock market. Is that true? If so, why the number 23 and at what number should i be buying, at 22 and lower? Or 22 i should stay away just incase? I mean what is this VIX thing?

A friend of mine started with Etrade. I signed up but they somehow mixed my information with my fathers and wanted me to fax them all of this information that I don’t have the time to do at the moment.
He also stated that etrade has a fee per trade which I don’t like..

but what are a list of stock trading sites? Good ones..

Else, how else do people invest in stocks other than the internet? Would it just be through the actual stock market?

I am 18 years old, freshman in college, and want to get into the stock market. I mean why not start now and make a little, or maybe a miracle will happen and I will make a good bit of money. I have no formal trading experience, I bought some stock through my grandfather a few years back, and want to know which online trading site would be best for a beginner. Start up fees are not an issue being that I am going to invest 00 from the start. Also, I probably won’t be doing a lot of trading at first.

not put anything into a Roth IRA?
My reasoning for this is that the stock market is now back to where it was over a decade ago. Had I put my hard-earned money into this I would have had virtually ZERO interest.
But, if I had put that money in the municipal bond fund (FNYTX) I would have gotten several percent interest without the volatility. See where I’m going with this?
I’d rather get the modest dividend that my municipal bond fund gives me (currently @ 4.25% compounded monthly) that hope for a double-digit percentage increase in the stock market, which is unlikely to come.

Hey all, I have signed up to share-watch and am looking for a reasonable investment in the stock market, cause lets face it, can things get any lower, or can they? Bank of Ireland are down to 70 odd cents, anglo are in the mid thirties and AIB are hovering under the €2 mark. I;m not looking to make a killing overnight, and I understand the volatility of shares, but my first question is, what effect will the possible government recapitalisation have on bank shares and secondly, if I am to purchase now, is it reasonable to suggest that over a longer period, ( 3 – 5 years ) regardless of recapitalisation that my investment will reap an award, however small.
